Scott Hogan ? SIGNED.....for Villa.
Pinched off kumb.

Okay...I am in no means an ITK but have heard from a very reliable source that a deal is pretty much done for Scott Hogan (the Brentford striker). I am not sure if this is for Jan or in the Summer, but he met with Slav & Sullivan before Christmas, everything has been agreed and just medical to complete. Fee around £13mill (again, no idea whether this involves add-ons etc, presume it does).

This comes directly from a Brentford player who obviously knows Hogan. Happy to share my source with mods/admin if needs be.

As always with these things, please don't shoot the messenger, just passing on the info. I'm always the first to say until its on the official site then it might not happen, but source seemed very confident that it was 99% done deal.

Why do you keep saying Sullivan is a billioanire. Never a good trait in a person who keeps on saying the same thing, it makes you come across as a doddery old fart. Still, you're hardly the only one on here.

Agree totally.

But I do think some clubs are spending a huge amount of time and resources trying to assess whether players will fit in for them. There's no failsafe method of doing that, but I think it can be done more thoroughly than we do it.

I think our assessment of players is very shallow. Little more than a look at some headline stat (goals, assists, crosses etc) and maybe watching a match or two. There doesn't seem to be much thoroughness to it. I suspect Hogan wasn't targetted because he fit our system (he doesn't!), or had any outstanding qualities (he doesn't!) - he was targetted because he had a hot streak in front of goal, and I doubt there was much more thought put into it than that. If we're being super-critical, that's just nowhere near good enough - it's amateur hour.

Agreed. I know a lot of people were annoyed with the loan to buy option on Zaza, but it's looking pretty smart right now, especially when you look at some of those other signings...

Ahmed Musa wasn't cheap either.

Regardless of past perormance, you never really know what you've got until the player is on the field for you. A great season in Holland or Russia can mean nothing. Sakho had basically no pedigree before joining us, and I think we all agree when he's fit, he's a very decent top flight striker.

There are no guarantees. When you don;t have a huge pot of cash, like 90% of clubs you have to be really careful, and you can live or die by one expensive signing.

I think a lot of people just think that you chuck money out there and your problems are solved, without realising that there's not a lot of attacking talent out there at the moment. Look at all the new strikers to the PL last summer who cost £15-30m+, and 4/5 of them to clubs in Europe or challenging for the title:

Lucas Perez at Arsenal
Michy Batshuayi at Chelsea
Islam Slimani at Leicester
Borja González at Swansea
Vincent Janssen at Spurs

None of these have exactly pulled up any trees have they?

None imo. The intention has been to spend bigger. This view that we are not spending is entirely wrong given any examination of the figures.

Again you seem to have intentionally read something that I didn't say into what I wrote. I don't think it is a joint process - I've said that all along.

our transfer policy is 2-bob. yes we have got a few bargains, but how many players do you reckon we've missed out on due to the penny pinching.

Sullivan is a billionaire

Yes, so the owner and the manager enter into a joint process with regard to signings.

Thanks, glad you agree.

It is complicated somewhat by the fact that some of the owner's signings seem to have been excellent. The two successful Summers that brought that squad together that finished 7th was driven mainly by Sullivan as far as I can tell.

Should an owner also be a DoF? In an ideal world, no of course not. But should a manager have autonomy on signings? Absolutely not, that would be a recipe for disaster imo.

Re: Scott Hogan ? SIGNED.....for Villa.
The fact that there's an argument going on about who's signed whom between the the manager and the owners tells you we are still a tinpot club when it comes to squad building.

The only time owners should be involved is if they are getting in the sorts of quality player in, in the positions the managers feels we are weak, that NO manager would ever reject being signed.

We've jumped a few steps up in moving stadiums the transfer policy for now has to be the same, it isn't and is not likely to be.

But you don't just do an assessment of the squad and then hand it over to the board.

The manager will sit down and have a meeting. Go through the assessment. Discuss why it needs strengthening. Then look at scouting reports and availability and then specify targets and prioritise them. It's a whole process that continually evolves.

You think Bilic just provides a squad assessment and then does no more until G&S come back to him and go "Right, you said we needed a CB so we have got you Robert Huth. He's on his way now for a medical".

Get a grip.

An assessment of the existing squad is simply not the same as the primary list of targets. Your comments make no sense at all.

You are hearing what you want to hear.

He never over-ruled Sam. He said "Sam had no other targets and I fancied Sakho. So I said to Sam 'We will get him in" and Sam said "Ok".

If Sam had said "No" I don't want him and he got him in anyway then you'd have a point to substantiate the point I think you are trying to make that G&S tells our managers who we are signing. When clearly he doesn't.

Re: Scott Hogan ? SIGNED.....for Villa.
Alex V 2:52 Wed Feb 22

Alex you are such a nob.

You say "I highly doubt Bilic does any of that" is response to me saying "I assume Bilic targets players and provides G&S with a list of targets and why he needs them".

Yet, you go on to say "I expect what Bilic does provide is an assessment of the current squad. Who he feels is weak, where the squad could be strengthened etc."

And then he would use the scouting reports to see which players can strengthen where needed and who are available from his assessment and then say to G&S: These are the targets.

I mean fucking hell Alex. You agree; but then take a thousand words to explain why you don't agree; when you actually do.

Go and play with the traffic.

El, to correct you it is not Sullivans money it is the business money. We are not David Sullivan T/A West Ham United (soon to be London).

Re: Scott Hogan ? SIGNED.....for Villa.
Christ you guys are blinded by PR/C and B specs.
In that video, in a rather snidey, big man cracked it manner, he says that finding/signing players is easy and managers make a big deal out of an easy job. He states that he over ruled the manager on Sakho, do you think he was the only one?
You boys need to smell the coffee.

Re: Scott Hogan ? SIGNED.....for Villa.
Before anyone starts getting pedantic, that's poorly worded by me - I meant the only definite proof of Bilic doing it was Defoe. I agree it's likely he had a hand in looking at Jelavic and Tore in the past, and maybe some others. No harm in having him suggest the odd name he might know about.
